Goodwins theory - Sound and Image (How it relates to our music video)

Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’ (Routledge 1992)

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
(e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
Our Video follows a typical pop type structure, focusing around a narrative.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
We illustrate the basic narrative of the music video by the shots we use e.g. time passing whilst Jonny is sitting on the sofa...

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Final cut in Final cut - quick timed... Personal overview (a justification)

Soooo.. We have now finished cutting and editing our music video.
it is a mediocre looking video, i would argue the fact we did our very best to make it look professional, however their are various reasons for this; one being, the obvious, we simply do not have the equipment/actors/locations/editing programs that the 'professionals' in the industry have at their disposal. Although, i do honestly believe that, as a group, we could have achieved something more impressive if the group (including myself) had been more punctual, focused and present during the editing period..! Unfortunately this has resulted in a average, slightly undistinguished Music Video.
Nevertheless we aspire to salvage the feeble excuse for a video that we have by making the quality of our written parts of the coursework to a high quality.

Screenshots

This is a screen shot of Final Cut Express during our project. As you can see from the screen shot most of our project is complete apart from we need to finish of some of the editing and add in some transitions. The bottom box of final cut shows our soundtrack and our sequence of clips in order. The top right box shows all our sequence but with split up into lots of different bits and the top right box shows the part of the sequence that we were currently working on when the screen shot was taken.
