Goodwins theory - Sound and Image (How it relates to our music video)

Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’ (Routledge 1992)

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
(e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
Our Video follows a typical pop type structure, focusing around a narrative.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
We illustrate the basic narrative of the music video by the shots we use e.g. time passing whilst Jonny is sitting on the sofa...

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Final cut in Final cut - quick timed... Personal overview (a justification)

Soooo.. We have now finished cutting and editing our music video.
it is a mediocre looking video, i would argue the fact we did our very best to make it look professional, however their are various reasons for this; one being, the obvious, we simply do not have the equipment/actors/locations/editing programs that the 'professionals' in the industry have at their disposal. Although, i do honestly believe that, as a group, we could have achieved something more impressive if the group (including myself) had been more punctual, focused and present during the editing period..! Unfortunately this has resulted in a average, slightly undistinguished Music Video.
Nevertheless we aspire to salvage the feeble excuse for a video that we have by making the quality of our written parts of the coursework to a high quality.

Screenshots

This is a screen shot of Final Cut Express during our project. As you can see from the screen shot most of our project is complete apart from we need to finish of some of the editing and add in some transitions. The bottom box of final cut shows our soundtrack and our sequence of clips in order. The top right box shows all our sequence but with split up into lots of different bits and the top right box shows the part of the sequence that we were currently working on when the screen shot was taken.

Extra Editing

We have been given the opportunity to do extra editing after college, out of lesson time. We have booked the day of Wednesday the 22nd of October where all our group members will come in and we will continue to edit our music video. Hopefully but this time we will also have the extra footage that we can upload onto final cut and edit and put into our music video. Once we have had this extra session our music video will start to look complete and all we will have to do is make sure the editing in the extra film is good and make sure the whole video runs smoothly with any transitions, all the editing and making sure the lipsyned parts are in the correct place. Then finally our project will be completed and ready to hand in on the deadline week starting the 3rd of November.

Extra Shooting

We are going to do a bit more extra shooting in one of our lessons because we did not quite get enough during the actual filming time. The part that we will be filming is the end of the music video as we have everything else already in order but no ending to finish the music video off.

Dirty Pretty Things Split

On the 1st October 2008, the four member band announced that they are going to split after their 11 date tour finishes in Southamptons Guildhall on the 18th of October. Frontman Carl Barat explained to the NME website that each band member would be exploring new music projects and none of this involved The Libertines. He also confirmed that they did not want to cancel their final tour and that they are reluctant to give up touring but will give the last waltz everything. Barat also said 'It's been a glorious three years which we all would gladly live out again, but it is time for us to try new things.' Their farewell tour kicks off on October the 4th in Glasgow....

Filming

We managed to get most of our filming done one evening after college in Hardwick. The filming went well apart from we didn't quite manage to get enough footage. We will now film the rest of the footage during one lesson when all group members are here! The part that i think went well during shooting was the variety of different angles and shots that we managed to get, the only bad point was that we did not quite manage to get all the footage done and we only had one female actor, where as in our plans we were going to have many different female actors.

Group 41 - Test Footage

Are test footage, is more an example of the kind of shots we will use and the location types, rather than a definite test of the narrative. Our shots also are not in any particular order. We were pleased however with how the test footage ended up looking with the music attached. The first shot is giving us an idea of how we want it could look when the male actor goes out on dates with a lady. The shot we got of the two lads walking towards the camera is the type of shot we will be hoping to use when the unhappy male performer is being comforted by his mates in the actual video. Also, we liked the look of the shot where the male performer would be singing looking straight into the camera. This test footage was just giving us an idea what sort of shots and angles we could use in the actual shooting of our music video.

Blog Feedback

All the other groups looked at our blog and then wrote down some feedback for us. Below is all the feedback we received......

Good Use of influential video
Good Pitch
Not Much evidence - on the band and previous videos...etc
Too vague on location, props...
need to extend on feedback for animatic
List of location shots need developed??

Now with this feedback we will take in consideration what all the groups have said in the feedback and we made changes accordingly.
We slightly developed the location further, but we were still undecided on where we actually filming so we could not do too much detail for this.
We also done a post on Band Info and Info on the band splitting up, which we did not have until after we received the feedback and finally we slightly added some more detail to the shot list.

Where are we going to shoot??!!

Here is a list of where we are planning to shoot our 'Plastic Hearts' music video.

Outside cineworld cinema (if we get permissions)
Chris's house (Hardwick)
-
Chris's Sofa
-
Chris's living room
Restaurant - Bella Italia, Frankie and Bennies, Chiquito's... (ask permission)
Cafe - (cafe direct, long road)
A street (long Road - ironic!) / (Luard rd, Addenbrookes..) / (Hardwick)

For some of these locations we need to ask permission before filming, if we do end up wanting to film at all of these places we will have to ring up before and make sure we have the permission that allows us to film there

Feedback from animatic

Cinema shot ( change from interior to exterior ) arts picture house? permission ..

Narrative is clear ( boy girl relationship )

Lyrics work well with visuals

The simplistic nature of the video reflects the song appropriately

Need to edit our final video more in time with the music/ lyrics
(didnt prioritise editing tempo)

The video does not look to complicated and should be easy enough to shoot and edit

Need to add more to the animatic to make sure the actual video carries on the whole length of the song

ANIMATIC

This is our animatic, if we had more time we would have liked to have drawn more pictures to put into the animatic, which would have made each of the clips shorter. Our animatic shows the rough idea of what we are hoping to happen in our actual music video. We can also use this when we are filming if we get stuck and do not no where we are at, this can help us by showing us what we have left to film.

Photos / Images

Some pictures that we thought worked well with what we are hoping to have within our music video.

We liked the look of this picture because we are hoping to get this in one of the first shots of our music video. It is a picture of a couple arguing and in our music video we are hoping to get this look but with a house in the background. This will then lead onto what happens in the rest of our 'Plastic Hearts' music video.

We also liked the look of this image because we are hoping to get a shot like this in our music video. In our music video we are going to have the male performer at home and feeling unhappy while watching television, because he has just split up with his girlfriend. This clip will be towards the beginning of our Dirty Pretty Things music video.

We liked the positioning of this shot, with it almost being a point of view shot from the woman. In our music video we are hoping to use shots like this but with the man looking into the camera and singing rather than talking to the woman. This shot will appear a few times throughout our music video as the man will not be interested in the woman so he is not listening to what she is saying and just singing along to the lyrics.

Influences/THE PITCH

Keywords
Literal - melting heart, waves, day(dawn til dusk),
Fun/Playful
Colourful
Performance
fragmented
1960's

Influences
Noah and the whale - 5 years time
Blur - song 2/ parklife / country house
Zutons - valerie
Sum41 - in too deep
Ok Go - here we go again
Feeder - just a day
Weezer - pork and beans
Arctic monkeys - fluorescent adolescent
Kate Nash - foundations
Jamie T - Sheila/ calm down dearest
Scouting 4 Girls - its not about you

The Jamie T video influenced us because we like the idea of an actor miming the words, one who is obviously not actually singing the lyrics. Bob Hoskins is the case in this video (an actor who is much older than Jamie T) if we chose to do this idea we would use somebody noticeably younger looking than our lead singer.

The Kate Nash video is very colourful and playful, we like this idea and would definately use aspects of it in ours.

Noah and the whale is a good example of the type of video we'll be making ....

Smile is a good example because it uses the same kind of effects such as when she is in the cafe with her ex she is singing but he is not aware.

A clip that we definately know we would like to use is a clip of one setting from dusk untill dawn which would probably be repeated when the chorus is heard (for literal meaning) 'as the days, like the waves, pile up behind you'.

We've initially had the idea of making our music video using a little bit of all of our influences; we like the idea of having fragmented clips (literal or non literal) which continue the length of our music clip. a main idea of ours is to use lots of quick editing between our shots to give our video a playful/comical feel.

The pitch

For our music video we are hoping to use a male performer who is an actor from college. For some of the camera shots we would film it with the cameraman sitting in a wheelchair. So then we can film while moving with the performer and also it gives a much smoother clip.

Some ideas for our location where : Restaurant with different girlfriends
Seaside
Town / City
Party with friends

Our main idea is that the performer has recently split up with his girlfriend and his mates keep trying to set him up with other girls to help him but he is not interested. When he is dating the girls, he is in his own world singing to the camera rather than talking to the date. The situations we would like to put the man in would be him dating lots of girls in different locations such as the seaside, restaurants, party's etc.

We thought this would be a good idea because it is different and requires skill of the actor and a challenge for the director. It would also be quite comical for the audience watching the man in situations where he is in his own world singing and the person or people with him are unaware of this.

Meaning Of Song

Our basic idea of what our song, Dirty Pretty Thing, 'Plastic Hearts' means is that the person is maybe trying to move on from an old girlfriend but cannot find anyone. The lyric that gave us this idea was when it says "Melt my plastic heart and help me move on". So for our music video we are considering a narrative video where a single male actor cannot move on from a previous girlfriend, he goes on dates with other ladies, but does not seem interested and wants his old girlfriend back.

DIRTY PRETTY THINGS - Plastic Hearts

You sauntered off and you said how’s tricks
You can’t mix drugs with your politics
But we took and talked and lost the plot
And after that everything seemed fine
And as it stings and beautiful collide
We drag each others worlds ride under the tide
With intoxicating hands
Cold cold hearts
And well laid plans

Are you listening
Are you listening
As the days
Like the waves
Pile up behind you

La la la la la
You keep it all
Melt my plastic heart
And help me move on
why cant i move on

How do we escape
The great pails of pouring rain
Go to an thorn island or a house in Spain oh
La la la la la la oh
Oh how i’d kill to go
So, Erect the gutters and rivet in
Life or buildings and medicines
We all make the same mistakes
Our pitfalls pull us together

Are you listening
Are you listening
As the days
Like the waves
Pile up behind me

La la la la la
They keep it all
Melt my plastic heart
help me move on
Ohh

we kicked this round my bedroom floor
lalalalala
hit the daylight hours but she wanted more
but the time the time has drifted away

are you listening
are you listening
as the days
like the waves
decisively pull us under

La la la la la
keep it all
Melt my plastic heart
And help me move on and on and on and on and on... and on

Friends for life and acquaintances
Romance and great distances
There’s been so many casualties
But I cannot wallow all of these
Oh no
